In response to unfounded accusations from various quarters, including former President Donald Trump, Attorney General Merrick Garland has addressed concerns about the Department of Justice’s handling of investigations involving Trump, President Joe Biden, and Hunter Biden.

Garland is scheduled to testify at a hearing before the Republican-led House Judiciary Committee, titled “Oversight of the U.S. Department of Justice.”

In a portion of his opening statement, Garland directly confronted those who have alleged collusion with President Biden, leniency toward Hunter Biden, and protection of the president.

He underscored a fundamental principle: the law should apply uniformly to all individuals, regardless of their power, wealth, political affiliations, or any other factors.

Garland reiterated the Justice Department’s unwavering commitment to pursuing the truth and adhering to the law, regardless of where the evidence may lead.

Garland clarified his role, emphasizing that he is not the president’s attorney or Congress’s prosecutor. Instead, he reaffirmed that the Justice Department’s allegiance lies with the American people, and their foremost duty is to adhere to the facts and the law in their investigative endeavors.

While Garland is not directly involved in the investigations under scrutiny, he has appointed special counsels to oversee them. Special Counsel Jack Smith is probing Trump’s handling of classified documents and his actions related to efforts to overturn the 2020 election.

Special Counsel Robert Hur is examining classified documents discovered and provided by President Biden’s team. Furthermore, in August, Garland designated David Weiss, a U.S. attorney appointed by Trump, as a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden.

These investigations have yielded indictments against Trump, comprising 44 felony charges, and three charges against Hunter Biden, with no charges currently filed against President Biden. Garland’s statement underscores the Justice Department’s unwavering dedication to impartially upholding the law and following the facts in its investigative pursuits.

THERE IS NOT ONE SET OF LAWS FOR THE POWERFUL AND ANOTHER FOR THE POWERLESS; ONE FOR THE RICH, ANOTHER FOR THE POOR; ONE FOR DEMOCRATS, ANOTHER FOR REPUBLICANS; OR DIFFERENT RULES, DEPENDING UPON ONE’S RACE OR ETHNICITY OR RELIGION.

AS THE PRESIDENT HIMSELF HAS SAID, AND I REAFFIRM HERE TODAY: I AM NOT THE PRESIDENT’S LAWYER. I WILL ALSO ADD THAT I AM NOT CONGRESS’S PROSECUTOR. THE JUSTICE DEPARTMENT WORKS FOR THE AMERICAN PEOPLE. OUR JOB IS TO FOLLOW THE FACTS AND THE LAW, WHEREVER THEY LEAD. AND THAT IS WHAT WE DO.
