According to a report from Mediate, CNN’s Dana Bash expressed clear disapproval while discussing a recent interview in which former President Donald Trump made contentious remarks about the migrant crisis at the southern border.
In a segment addressing President Joe Biden’s border wall policy, Bash provided details about Trump’s interview with a right-wing media outlet:
“Now, let’s turn to something Donald Trump said on this matter earlier this week. In an interview, the former president made remarks reminiscent of white nationalists when speaking to National Pulse, a right-leaning news source.”
She then played a clip of Trump’s comments, in which he remarked, “What we are witnessing right now is unlike anything anyone has ever seen. It’s a deeply saddening situation for our country.
It’s poisoning our nation’s spirit. It’s highly concerning, and individuals are entering with various health issues, carrying all sorts of ailments.”
Bash went on to share a statement from the Anti-Defamation League that criticized Trump’s statements, alleging that they echoed nativist rhetoric that could potentially incite violence.
Trip Gabriel from The New York Times also weighed in on Trump’s language, characterizing it as having undertones of white supremacy and Adolf Hitler’s racial hatred. The Times credited MSNBC’s Mehdi Hasan for bringing attention to the interview.
In response to the criticism, a spokesperson for Trump, Steven Cheung, defended the former president’s remarks, describing them as a “common phrase used in everyday discourse” and dismissing allegations of racism or xenophobia as “baseless outrage.”
OBODY HAS EVER SEEN ANYTHING LIKE WHAT WE’RE WITNESSING RIGHT NOW. IT IS A VERY SAD THING FOR OUR COUNTRY. IT’S POISONING THE BLOOD OF OUR COUNTRY. IT’S SO BAD, AND PEOPLE ARE COMING IN WITH DISEASE, PEOPLE ARE COMING IN WITH EVERY POSSIBLE THING THAT YOU CAN HAVE.
“HERE IS WHAT WE HEARD FROM THE ANTI-DEFAMATION LEAGUE, WHICH RELEASED A SCATHING STATEMENT, SAYING IN PART, ‘INSINUATING THAT IMMIGRANTS ARE, QUOTE, ‘POISONING THE BLOOD OF OUR COUNTRY’ ECHOES NATIVIST TALKING POINTS AND HAS THE POTENTIAL TO CAUSE REAL DANGER AND VIOLENCE,’
This discussion underscored the controversial nature of Trump’s rhetoric and its potential impact on the ongoing political discourse surrounding immigration and border security.
