Attorneys representing former President Donald Trump have endorsed a request from media organizations seeking permission to broadcast his federal election fraud trial, set to begin in March next year.

The legal team argues that allowing cameras in the courtroom would act as a tool to highlight what they perceive as unfair treatment of Trump within the justice system, providing the American public with a firsthand view of the proceedings.

Trump, consistently denying and condemning the criminal charges accusing him of conspiring to overturn the 2020 election, has aligned himself with a coalition of media outlets that requested the presiding judge’s approval for televised coverage in early October.

Special counsel Jack Smith, however, opposed the broadcast request last week, citing federal and local regulations that prohibit televising trials of this nature.

The Washington election fraud trial is the most significant among the five trials facing Trump in the coming months, with four being criminal cases.

A New York criminal case involving falsified documents is scheduled for late March, and a federal case in Florida alleging mishandling of classified documents is set for May.

While the trial date for a Georgia election fraud case is yet to be determined, it is expected to begin in January at the earliest.

Additionally, a separate New York civil trial addressing business fraud charges is currently ongoing. In the Washington election fraud case, Trump has contested a court-imposed partial gag order limiting his public comments about the case and witnesses.

His legal team objected to the order in a filing on Wednesday, arguing that the Department of Justice provided no evidence of threats or harassment directed at prosecutors, witnesses, or court staff in the three months since Trump’s indictment.

IN A FILING ON FRIDAY, THE ATTORNEYS ASSERTED, “PRESIDENT TRUMP CALLS FOR SUNLIGHT. EVERY PERSON IN AMERICA, AND BEYOND, SHOULD HAVE THE OPPORTUNITY TO STUDY THIS CASE FIRSTHAND AND WATCH AS, IF THERE IS A TRIAL, PRESIDENT TRUMP EXONERATES HIMSELF OF THESE BASELESS AND POLITICALLY MOTIVATED CHARGES.”
