A tragic incident unfolded when a 34-year-old man opened fire on an “unsuspecting family,” resulting in three fatalities, including the suspect, and leaving one child injured.

According to the Hampden County District Attorney’s Office, the Springfield Police Department was alerted to gunfire on Monday, August 14, at 2:40 p.m. Responding officers rushed to 174 Berkshire Ave., where they discovered Victor Nieves, Kim Fairbanks, and a dog deceased on the first floor of an apartment building. Further exploration of the residence led them to find three children, aged 12, 10, and 5, in a bedroom.

Tragically, the 12-year-old and 10-year-old had sustained gunshot wounds, while the 5-year-old escaped physical harm. The injured children were swiftly transported to Baystate Medical Center, with streets blocked off to ensure quick ambulance access.

The 10-year-old was later airlifted to Boston Children’s Hospital, while the 12-year-old remains in stable condition at Baystate. Heartbreakingly, on Thursday, August 17, the mother of the 10-year-old, Aubrianna Serra, shared devastating news of her passing.

In a Facebook post, Stephanie Croteau mourned the loss of her daughter and described the pain as unbearable. She reflected on Aubrianna’s bright spirit and her ability to bring smiles to others. Croteau’s heartfelt message conveyed the profound grief she feels at having to say goodbye to her child.

The Hampden County District Attorney’s Office revealed that Victor Nieves resided on the apartment building’s second floor. Homicide investigators have determined that Nieves forcibly entered his neighbor’s residence through the front door and initiated gunfire toward the occupants before ultimately taking his own life. The circumstances surrounding this tragic event are deeply saddening and heartbreaking for all involved.
