Liz Cheney, the former Republican representative from Wyoming who was ousted from her leadership position for denouncing former President Donald Trump’s election lies, has issued a warning to her former party: If they elect Jim Jordan as the next House speaker, they will lose the majority and the trust of the American people.

According to a report by Bloomberg on Friday, October 13, 2023, Jordan, a staunch Trump ally and the chair of the House Judiciary Committee, is one of the candidates vying for the speaker’s gavel after Kevin McCarthy was removed from the post following the January 6 committee’s final report.

The report revealed that McCarthy had prior knowledge of Trump’s plans to incite a violent mob to attack the Capitol and overturn the 2020 election results.

Cheney, who served as the vice chair of the bipartisan January 6 committee, said in a speech at the University of Minnesota on Wednesday that Jordan was a “significant player” in Trump’s conspiracy to steal the election and seize power.

She accused him of urging Vice President Mike Pence to refuse to count lawful electoral votes and participating in numerous meetings with Trump, Rudy Giuliani, and other officials to discuss strategies for challenging the election.

“Jim Jordan knew more about what Donald Trump had planned for January 6 than any other member of the House of Representatives,” Cheney said.

“Jim Jordan was involved, was part of the conspiracy in which Donald Trump was engaged as he attempted to overturn the election.”

Cheney also challenged Jordan to explain why he did not report to the Capitol Police what he knew about Trump’s intentions.

She said that if Republicans nominate Jordan to be speaker, they will be abandoning the Constitution and betraying their oath of office.

“If they were to decide that, there would no longer be any possible way to argue that a group of elected Republicans could be counted on to defend the Constitution,” she said.

“If Republicans nominate Jordan to be speaker, they will lose the House majority and they’ll deserve to.” Cheney’s prediction is based on her belief that most Americans reject Trump’s lies and value democracy over loyalty to a single person.

She said that she hopes that Republicans will choose a speaker who will uphold the rule of law and restore trust in the institution of Congress.

However, Jordan has the backing of Trump and McCarthy, who have both endorsed him for speaker.

He also has the support of many members of the House Freedom Caucus, a group of conservative hardliners who have been loyal to Trump and his agenda.

Jordan has denied any wrongdoing or involvement in the January 6 attack. He has dismissed the January 6 committee’s report as a “witch hunt” and a “partisan smear campaign.”

He has also defended his actions as part of his duty to investigate election irregularities and protect the integrity of the vote. Jordan has vowed to fight for Trump’s policies and agenda if he becomes speaker.

He has promised to repeal President Joe Biden’s legislative achievements, such as the infrastructure bill and the Build Back Better Act.

He has also pledged to launch investigations into Biden’s administration and impeach him if possible. The House Republican caucus is expected to vote on their speaker nominee next week.

The winner will then face a floor vote in January, where he or she will need 217 votes from all members of Congress to become speaker.

The outcome will depend on whether Republicans can maintain their slim majority in the House after the midterm elections in November.
