Idaho Woman Sentenced to 10 Years for Violently Shaking 6-Month-Old Baby

by Jessica

Sarah Kuiper-Boles, 29, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for violently shaking a 6-month-old baby she was babysitting.

The disturbing incident unfolded after Kuiper-Boles, who initially connected with Simona Contreras through Facebook, gained the mother’s trust and began regularly babysitting her four children, as reported by KTVB.

Contreras grew concerned when her baby son, Julian, exhibited unusual behavior after being in Kuiper-Boles’ care. The mother noticed that Julian seemed uncomfortable and unwilling to be held, prompting her to seek medical attention. Initially attributing the behavior to a fall from the couch, Contreras took Julian to the hospital when his condition worsened.

A week later, a CAT scan revealed severe injuries, including blood, inflammation, and fluid around Julian’s brain. Kuiper-Boles eventually confessed to violently shaking the baby because he wouldn’t stop crying. Detectives noted that during a police interview, she did not reenact the actions on a baby doll, expressing fear of revealing the severity of the shaking.

The violent shaking caused significant harm to Julian, leading to five surgeries and developmental challenges. Contreras expressed the emotional toll, stating that they are uncertain about Julian’s future and the potential need for more surgeries.

Sarah Kuiper-Boles was sentenced to 10 years in prison and is prohibited from having any contact with the victim, the victim’s family, or minors during this period. Detectives revealed that she had an extensive health and welfare history in another state.

The case serves as a grim reminder of the importance of background checks and references when choosing caregivers for children, prompting Detective Shawn Becker to encourage parents to vet those entrusted with their children’s care diligently.
