Former National Security Advisor John Bolton Reveals Autocratic Leaders’ True Opinions on Trump

by Jessica

Despite Donald Trump’s frequent boasts about his connections with some of the world’s most autocratic leaders, a former staff member suggests that those leaders held a different view of the former president. John Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security advisor from 2018 to 2019, shared insights during an appearance on CNN’s The Source with Kaitlan Collins.

Bolton asserted that leaders such as Chinese President Xi Jinping, North Korean President Kim Jong Un, and Russian President Vladimir Putin considered Trump a “laughing fool” and were fully prepared to exploit him if he were to be re-elected. He criticized Trump’s temperament, attention span, and lack of knowledge in international affairs, emphasizing the former president’s belief that personal relationships with authoritarian leaders were paramount.

Highlighting Trump’s inconsistency in decision-making and his preoccupation with public image, Bolton expressed concern about the former president’s ability to navigate crises effectively. He stressed the need for a resolute president focused on national security rather than personal image.

When questioned about Trump’s rapport with foreign leaders, Bolton indicated that Trump believed these relationships would save him in terms of policy dynamics. However, Bolton argued that autocratic leaders like Putin and Xi understood their roles for their respective countries, contrasting it with Trump’s perceived lack of comprehension of the presidency’s responsibilities.

Drawing from his experiences in meetings and phone conversations with these leaders, Bolton suggested that they viewed Trump as a figure to be taken advantage of due to his perceived self-absorption, a characteristic that Trump failed to recognize.
