“He’s About As Old As I Am, But He Can’t Remember His Wife’s Name.” Biden Ribs Trump

According to a report in Brisbane Times on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, in a bid to deflect criticism over his age, President Joe Biden has adopted a new tactic, using humor to address concerns about his fitness for office.

In a recent appearance on Late Night With Seth Meyers on NBC, Biden engaged in playful banter, taking a jab at his predecessor, Donald Trump, over his own memory lapses.

During the interview, Meyers jokingly referenced classified information suggesting Biden’s age to be 81, to which Biden quipped, “Who the hell told you that? That’s classified!” He then seized the opportunity to rib Trump, noting a video where Trump appeared to forget his wife’s name, Melania.

“You got to take the other guy,” Biden quipped, referring to Trump, “He’s about as old as I am, but he can’t remember his wife’s name.” This lighthearted exchange was part of Biden’s broader effort to reassure voters about his cognitive abilities, a concern that has been highlighted in recent polls.

However, Biden also took a more serious tone, emphasizing that the election should be about the candidates’ ideas rather than their age. “It’s about how old your ideas are,” he remarked, criticizing Trump’s regressive stance on issues like Roe v. Wade.

The issue of age and mental acuity has been a point of contention for both candidates. Biden has faced scrutiny over his memory lapses, particularly in light of a special counsel report citing his poor memory regarding key dates and events. Meanwhile, Trump has had his own share of gaffes, including confusing names and historical facts.

One notable incident Biden referenced was Trump’s apparent mix-up of his wife’s name during a recent speech. Trump mistakenly referred to Mercedes Schlapp as “Mercedes” instead of Melania. However, Trump’s spokesperson clarified that the reference was to Schlapp, not Melania, although Trump has previously misspelled Melania’s name on Twitter.

Despite the playful tone of the interview, Biden used the platform to address serious issues, including his vision for the future. When asked about his agenda for 2024, Biden emphasized the need to “finish the job,” signaling his commitment to ongoing initiatives.

The interview also touched on lighter topics, such as memes circulating online depicting Biden in a “Dark Brandon” persona. Biden humorously rejected the notion, stating, “No, I resent the hell out of it,” before donning Ray-Ban sunglasses for effect.

Additionally, Biden addressed conspiracy theories, including one linking him with pop star Taylor Swift. In response to Meyers’ inquiry, Biden jokingly deflected, stating, “Where are you getting this information? It’s classified,” before confirming Swift’s endorsement in 2020.
