In a distressing incident, law enforcement deputies recently apprehended a babysitter suspected of abusing an infant under her care, causing significant injuries that are expected to impact the child’s life permanently.

According to a news release from the Suwannee County Sheriff’s Office, on Sunday, Jan. 14, Suwannee County Fire personnel responded to an address in the 7500 block of U.S. 90 regarding a 10-month-old baby experiencing a seizure. The caregiver, identified as 39-year-old Heather Hogan, informed paramedics that the infant had suffered a seizure and fallen off the couch twice.

Paramedics transported the child to a local hospital, and upon examination, they determined that the baby’s injuries were consistent with child abuse, prompting them to involve the sheriff’s office.

The victim, sadly, sustained extensive injuries, including a broken clavicle bone with a “large bruise extending from the front of their shoulder up around their neck that appeared to have occurred several days prior.” Shockingly, the child also tested positive for cannabis.

The sheriff’s office reported that the baby had injuries to the inside of the mouth, multiple bruises in different stages of healing, and fractured bones in the spine and leg, indicative of forceful yanking and impact on a hard surface. Tragically, the baby also suffered subdural hematomas, leading to the loss of the ability to see.

Medical professionals anticipate that the victim will endure long-term disabilities as a result of the alleged abuse.

Following a thorough investigation, the sheriff’s office identified Heather Hogan as the primary suspect and obtained a warrant for her arrest.

On Feb. 14, Hogan was arrested and booked into the Suwannee County Jail on charges of aggravated child abuse and child neglect. She is currently held on a $600,000 bond.

The sheriff’s office expressed profound dismay, stating, “This case of abuse is sadly one of the worst our investigators have encountered. It is incomprehensible how such cruelty towards an innocent child can take place in a civilized society.”
