Mother Purposefully Starved 1-Year-Old Daughter to Death, Withheld Medical Care

by Jessica

According to court documents, Denise, a 48-year-old mother, was found guilty of second-degree murder and child abuse in connection to the death of her 1-year-old daughter, Miriam.

The verdict was reached on Friday, November 10, 2023. Denise faces a mandatory sentence of at least 23 years behind bars and a maximum sentence of life in prison, as indicated by court records.

Throughout the trial, Denise informed the jury that her religious beliefs prevented her from seeking medical care for her daughter, who weighed only 9 lbs and suffered from a rare condition affecting bone development in children (Rickets) at the time of her death.

Denise called 911, reporting her daughter as unresponsive. First responders transported the child to the hospital, where she was later pronounced dead.

An autopsy determined malnutrition as the cause of death. Medical professionals also noted the child’s rare bone development condition (Rickets).

Authorities uncovered that Denise intentionally provided her daughter with an insufficient diet and withheld necessary medical care. At the time of her death, the 1-year-old weighed only 9 lbs.

During an investigation interview, Miriam’s parents reportedly stated that they had taken the baby to a doctor once after her birth but refrained from seeking further medical care due to religious beliefs.

The baby also suffered multiple broken ribs and other bones, according to court records. Miriam’s father, Ernest, pleaded guilty to manslaughter and child abuse.

Following Miriam’s death, all of the couple’s six other children were placed in foster care. Denise is scheduled to be sentenced in January 2024.
